THE PATCHWORK FAMILY AMSTERDAM FASHION WEEK 2023

Amsterdam, August 2023

During Amsterdam Fashion Week 2023, The Patchwork Family presented a collective show featuring seven capsule collections, one from each designer. My role within the project was show director, overseeing the structure and positioning of the presentation as a unified whole, as well as a participating designer

The show was conceived as an alternative to the conventional fashion week format of runways. Rather than presenting designers as isolated competitors, the collective positioned itself as a shared platform. Community was treated as a strategy but foremost the strength of this collective. The aim was to create visibility, credibility, and scale for emerging designers by operating collectively within an established fashion week context.

As show director, the focus lay on building a clear framework that allowed individual identities to exist within a collective presentation, while maintaining a coherent narrative across the show.

The Patchwork Family consists of recent graduates navigating both creative and commercial development. The show functioned as the threshold of entry into the fashion industry by sharing resources, platform, and audience. This approach challenged traditional gatekeeping models that often limit access for young designers.

Up-cycling formed the shared foundation of the project, not as a trend but as a core method and ethical position. Each designer approached reuse differently, allowing autonomy within a common system. As show director, it was essential to highlight these differences while preserving a unified visual language, ensuring the audience could read both individuality and collective intent.
